Many Amsterdammers are talking about
it: it is busy in the city, especially in the center. It seems like
everyone wants to stay in Amsterdam. Due to the high demand and low
supply, house prices are rising and the rents are exploding. Rent or
buy a house? Impossible.
This problem is not unique to
Amsterdam. Other popular world cities have the same. That is why
eight of those cities, including Amsterdam, sent a letter of fire to
the United Nations about this.
With less money you can no longer buy
in the city
More and more (international) investors
with a lot of money buy houses in a popular city. They sell them with
a lot of profit, rent them for high prices or put them on Airbnb. Due
to the high demand and low supply, house prices are rising and the
rents are exploding. And there is a big gap between rich and poor.
People with a low or average income can hardly go to Amsterdam
anymore. Especially not in the centre. On Monday July 16th they
handed over an incendiary letter to the United Nations in New York.
The cities that have now joined are New
York, London, Paris, Berlin, Barcelona, Montreal and
Montevideo. But there is more to it. The main message of the letter:
society in popular big cities is threatened. The right of residents
to affordable housing is jeopardized by speculators, investors
The cities now jointly plead for a
solution. They do this at the highest level: the UN. So that they
have more opportunities at national level to prevent speculation, for
example. And keep enough affordable housing and get into the city.
Dublin does nothing. They can plea for a change to housing rights so rent caps can be made possible.

Only female shower in Dublin Merchants Quay. The social workers earn E22.50 an hour and in the evenings and weekends double pay. All they do to keep it clean is mop for 3 seconds. Most homeless have athletes foot from shower trays. Other diseases are increased compared to the rest of the population of Ireland. The wheelchair toilet and shower are out of use.
